A beautiful patio can be a fantastic place to enjoy the pleasant spring weather and cool summer evenings. Older patios, especially those poured more than forty years ago, can begin to look pretty rough from decades of concrete erosion and damage. Fortunately, you don’t have to tear them out completely to enjoy hanging out on your patio furniture this season.

If you’ve got an outdoor patio that needs a little work, our team of concrete specialists at ACT Restoration can get it looking fantastic in time for summer cookout season. In this post, we break down our patio revitalization process from start to finish and talk about how we can get your patio looking beautiful again.

1.      Step One: Assess the Damage

The first step to getting the beautifully restored patio you’ve been dreaming of is to call our team of concrete restoration contractors to assess the damage. We’ll determine how extensive the damage is and make recommendations for grinding, polishing, and staining.

Most older concrete from a few decades back will have chipping and holes from many years of snow and rain. We’ll also be on the lookout for cracks and bubbles. Additionally, there may be some degree of erosion.

2.      Step Two: Smooth the Surface

To begin your patio restoration process, we’ll use aggressive diamonds to grind the surface of your concrete. We use a wet grind method that minimizes the dust particles and creates a cleaner working environment.

In this process, the water will mix with the ground concrete to create a slurry across your floor. Diamond abrasives used in the wet grind method help create a more precise, smoother surface than other methods. It’s also the best way to repair certain types of damage.

3.      Step Three: Apply a Stain and Coating

Once we’ve smoothed out your concrete patio floor, it’s time to apply a stain and coating. We have a wide range of concrete stains to choose from and can create a look based on your desired outcome.

For example, for the Fridley patio project, we first applied a base color of concrete stain. After that, we added two enhancer stain colors to complete the look. Finally, we protected it with a coat of urethane mixed with a grit additive to create slip resistance on the patio. The completed look created a stunning place for the family to relax outdoors.
